EFSA Alert- Safflower Oil (April 22, 2009)

The European Safety Authority (EFSA) has found limited evidence linking artifical coloring to hyperactivity in children, according to Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ).  The EFSA has reviewed a study which purported the connection, concluding that there was a lack of evidence in the intial research, and does not support changing current limits in use of the studied additives.  These findings challenge those of the 2007 University of Southampton study, which concluded that mixtures of coloring and sodium benzoate increased levels of hyperactivity in children.  FSANZ currently validates EFSA's conlusions as they pursue their own studies into the results.
