Annatto Committee
The Annatto Committee addresses special issues associated with the color additive annatto and has participated in several studies to demonstrate the safety of this important color additive when used consistent with good manufacturing practices. The committee submitted a series of comments as the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) worked to develop two annatto specifications – bixin and norbixin formulations.
Color Certification Fee Committee
The Color Certification Fee Committee deals with the FDA and fees charged for each pound of color certified. The FDA recently imposed a fee increase for color batch certification. IACM is taking steps to minimize overall program costs, including possible refunds from excess reserves. Efforts are underway to educate Congress, particularly FDA authorizing committees, regarding the color certification program and associated fees. IACM is calling for FDA to provide transparency in financial reporting, establish a reasonable cap on operating reserves, maximize efficiency in laboratory operations, and explore options for self-certification.
Curcumin Committee
The Curcumin Committee addresses special issues associated with turmeric and curcumin. A recent study conducted in India demonstrated the safety of this material under the conditions of its intended use.
High Production Volume Committee
The HPV Committee addresses scientific issues related to the EPA High Production Volume Challenge program, testing chemicals manufactured or imported at over a million pounds a year, and making publicly available baseline health and environmental effects data. As a result, some colors require additional testing and evaluation. Work continues, as IACM assists member companies achieve compliance.
