Naturals Committee
The Naturals Committee addresses issues associated with the use of exempt from certification colors, including safety, labeling, and adulteration. Currently, the Committee is working with the U.S. Pharmacopeia on a monograph development for natural colors in the Food Chemicals Codex (FCC). One of the main drivers of this project is to assist USP in developing suitable solutions to identify and prevent the potential adulteration of natural colors.

Annatto Subcommittee
A subcommittee of the Naturals Committee which addresses special issues associated with the color additives annatto and has participated in several studies to demonstrate the safety of this important color additive when used consistent with good manufacturing practices. The subcommittee has submitted a series of comments as the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) worked to develop two annatto specifications – bixin and norbixin formulations.


Synthetics Committee
The Synthetics Committee addresses issues associated with the use of certified colors including safety, labeling, and allowable limits. Currently the Committee is leading a coalition of color manufacturers, users, and user associations to deal with various challenges surrounding the safety of certified colors.

Color Certification Fee Subcommittee
This subcommittee deals with the FDA and fees charged for each pound of color certified. The subcommittee has initiated efforts to minimize overall program costs and to educate Congress regarding the color certification program and associated fees.
